Grub

Whites grubs

Grubs eat the roots of many plants but mostly lawn roots.  This will make your lawn become yellow, soft and spongeous.  A group of larvas can destroy a square foot per day and cause lots of damages.  Il you can gently flip the grass over, you`ll see hoe the larvas have attacked your lawn.

On a lawn that is irigated properly, the presence of 5 to 10 larvas on a square meter is bad.  Skunks, racoons may cause a lot of damages to lawns infested with grubs, because they like them.  They will turn the lawn and dig holes up to 15cm (6 inches) to get them.

This insect life has 3 phases.  The white worm is a small larva that will feed on the grass roots until the end of November.  As soon as the temperature drops, it will go deeper in the soil and stay there for winter season.

When spring is there, the larvas go back in motion and will stop heating around half of the month of May and then mutate.  Two weeks latet, the adult bug get out and can now fly.  It will reproduce in moist locations like ledge, house gutters and other.  The female will lay her eggs in the hot soil of lawns.  Three weeks after the eggs will hatch and the white worms will come out and the cycle start over again.

It`s been a few years now that grubs spreaded to Montreal and the surrounding regions.  The insect came with the shipping of roses from Europe to the USA around 1940 and then propagated to Ontario around the beginning of 1960 and then in the Montreal region around 1986.  It`s been about 5-6 years now that people noticed a big increase in the damages caused by the grubs.

There is close to 2 ouf of 3 lawns affected by the grubs.
